December 2005
I was given a new fish handling tool by one of our clients and we wanted to share the product with everyone.  We have been using the tool since August and have safely handled a wide variety of fish.  The name of the tool is called “The Fish Grip” and it can be purchased from Cabela’s.

The Fish Grip is made of bright high impact plastic and it floats just in case you drop it in the water.  It has a flexible handle strap that stretches over your wrist to keep it secure to your hand.  The unit has a cam-lock action that enables you to land and release fish safely, easily and keeps you from handling the fish directly.  This reduces the chance of harm to you or the fish.

The picture shows that even a “big” fish can be handled safely.  It a great tool for handling northern pike or other toothy critters.  The jaws of the unit are flat and lock tight together so no puncture of the mouth of the fish is needed to secure it.  Once the fish is secure there is a hole in the handle that will allow your scale hook to be inserted in so you can weigh the fish without ever touching it.  After you weigh and take a picture of the fish you can remove the scale, hold the fish over the water, release the locking cam-lock action and the fish is released safe and unharmed.

We are recommending this unit to safely handle and release any fish.
